Night at Bear Mountain. Summer Solstice
October 31st. From the earliest day i can recall memory, (in this lifetime!) Halloween is my favorite day of the year. My own personal national holiday. A day to put on a mask and reveal our inner selves to the outside world. A day to create illusion and celebrate the enchanting side of shadow as an accepted and integral part of life. In the Celtic tradition of Samhain, it is the time of honoring winter’s approach after the bountiful harvest. To go within during the darker days to hibernate, simplify, rest and renew for rebirth of life.
In the words of the Goddess Isis, “Stop the illusion of who you are supposed to be, and start the Reality of Who You Are.” Whatever costume you are wearing this year, ask why you chose it? Why did you opt to ‘hide yourself’ behind this mask of illusion? Maybe you are allowing an elemental core of your Being to be seen by yourself and the world for a day. If you haven’t chosen a costume, take a moment to energetically garb yourself in what feels fun and freeing. Acknowledge and Receive It. Do you embrace the character of a Knight? A Viking? A Vampire? a Fairy or Elemental Queen? Maybe a grizzly old Sea Captain who is renewed like magic by water? Guaranteed whatever you are drawn to is a hidden part of yourself urging to be outed. Every Day, not just one day a year. Stop the Illusion of thinking you are merely a person who works for a living, with two kids, a picket fence and maybe a dog. Start the Reality of honoring who you are behind the bigger picture of your own passions.
I am not encouraging you to run around in a Greek Goddess Costume come Monday and certainly an ‘adult Power Ranger’ would gather some looks at the local ShopWise on a Tuesday morning, To which my impish side says.. WHO CARES? lets Shake ‘Em Up!. (So in reality, forget the previous..’i am not encouraging you’ line…that was merely Illusion).
However! Why not accept that maybe, just maybe, there are parts of that Greek Goddess (hello Athena!) that wishes to observe life detached, yet strong in Who She (He!) Is or that Power Ranger with hidden desire to be the cloaked hero for the greater good. In with the Rescue! out in a Flash! With all sorts of fun toys and a flashy car in which to bring Light.
So in this season of hocus pocus, hiding behind masks and the general election..(it all seems to go together doesn’t it?) ask to Stop the Illusion of Who You are Supposed to Be and Start the Reality of Who You Are. Incorporate those elements of the deepest, most passionate, gnawing parts of yourself. Put on the mask you choose for today to wear the other 364 days of the year. There will be a connection to Yourself. Your Divine, Playful, Warrior, Gentle and Loving Self that lurks WithIn. For those who have thought of Halloween as a silly holiday that you don’t engage with? I lovingly say to you.. Lighten Up! Stop being so Serious.. about Yourself! Step outside your box. PLAY. Find out what is behind the Mask and Curtain You keep so Tightly Cloaked. For heaven’s sake on this day of all days.. dont be scared! One little known thing is that Joy and Play are necessary and a vital alchemical process to balance our human experience. It is time to challenge the stubborn human ideal that the more we work, the worthier we feel to ourselves and others. EGADS, Our Total Work equals Our Total Worth?!!?.. SsssCcc-ARY!!!! (Shivers up and down my spine…Demons and Ghosts are Nuttin’ compared to that Illusion… Brrrrrrrr…).
So all you Elves out there. I expect to see a lot more mischievous frolic and gleeful mirth more often than not. Monks and Priests…more sagely divine wisdom with confidence please. Amazon Warriors? Stand Your Ground with Love. Angels and Celestial Beings? Bring on the Light and Etheric wonder! Fairy GodMothers? Spread your daily enchantment with your sparkly wand. We need it. Witches, Warlocks, Sorcerers, Sprites and Pirates too. Come out of your hidey holes. And Bring Your Good Magic Too.
Stop the Illusion of Who You are Supposed to Be. Start the Reality of Who You Are. And do it every day of the Year.
